Hi guys, I’m off from my first lesson of creative writing at the Irish Writers Museum of Dublin. It has been a great start. I felt quite relaxed, and I decided that, for the purpose of writing, switching from Italian to English would be the best, so I can practice, they can understand what I’m writing of and give me the feedback I need to improve my writing skills.
We’ve been given few excercises:
1) write a short story of 101 words about anything (and I’m telling you, 101 words is a pretty short story)
2) write a short story (no more then 4-5 pages) about a character who spends half an hour of a day in a park and his mood changes completely over this period of time. He gets to the park happy (for example) and then he met somebody or something happens and his feelings are affected by that. How did it happen? It would be very easy to say he got pist off by this, but the challenge is to show how he got pist off through his actions without mentioning the word pist off at all!!!!
3) list of things, people, situations, feelings, life stories, memories we would like to write about
4) list of things we would hate to write about
5) list of things we are afraid of (that’s an easy one
)
6) write a fantastical poetry following on from a line written by Saffo
7) take the heading of a book we love and describe why we love it so much
buy a fancy notebook!!!!!
In order to have some direction at home, we’ve been provided with examples of short novels written by important authors. We need to read them and make up our own stories based on those ones.
Someone, don’t ask me who because I can’t remember it, said that we should spend 5 hours a day writing and reading. That would be great, but in an ideal world. So the trainer said that while we have to work and a lot of other things to do, nevertheless we have to commit 30 minutes of our daily time to writing. I might wake up half an hour early everyday and try to do it before going to work, or I can do it when I’m off from work, but I’d be fresher in the morning hours then evenings’. We can use the center if we want, for reading and writing. But we really need to stick with a timetable and follow it.
That’s it!
Ahh, I haven’t told you the best of it, yet. We have to get that list ready for next Tuesday!!!! That’s going to be an interesting challenge. I’ll keep you updated, and every comment (even correction on my spelling or grammar) is more then welcome!
